JBG welcomes volunteers 5 days each week at either of our two Austin locations: The Garfield Farm (4008 River Rd. Cedar Creek, TX) where we grow all of our veggies, and the Hergotz Packing Shed (9515 Hergotz Ln. Austin, TX) where all of the produce is washed, packed and cooled. We also offer volunteering opportunities at our farm in Denton! Volunteer on the farm for half a day (8 am to 1 pm) in exchange for a share of veggies. JBG accepts volunteers on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. At our Garfield location, we are also accepting volunteers on Saturdays and Sundays.
How to Volunteer
If you're interested in volunteering at either of our Austin locations, please email us at email@example.com
and let us know when and at what location you'd like to help, either the Garfield Farm Greenhouse or Hergotz Ln. Packing Shed. You must receive confirmation email prior to coming to volunteer...and if you sign-up to volunteer it is very important that you honor your commitment and arrive at the farm on-time at your scheduled location. Please note that due to liability concerns, all volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and sign a waiver before volunteering.
JBG - Garfield Farm Greenhouse
Our Garfield Farm is just 10 miles outside of Austin, but offers a chance to get out of the city and see where your food is grown. Volunteers usually help out in the greenhouse and headhouse. The headhouse is where our crops are seeded before being moved to the greenhouses for growing for a few weeks before being transplanted into the fields. Although the Headhouse is a shady and insulated metal building, we recommend that volunteers bring a hat and wear sturdy shoes just in case we have work outside. Also please bring plenty of water and snacks. All shifts are half days, from 8 AM – 1 PM, and volunteers are compensated with a share of veggies at the end of their shift.
At the Garfield farm you will work directly with our Greenhouse Manager, Brandon, or Greenhouse Assistant, Adrienne, to assist us in completing our weekly seeding schedule, mix organic soil mix, or help move plants from the greenhouses to our adjacent shadehouse which we use to harden off the plants to ready them for the harsh conditions once they are transplanted to the fields. If you like once we are done with work for the shift, feel free to enjoy a tour of the farm and see how our crops are growing!
JBG - Hergotz Packing Shed
Once our produce is harvested, we transport it to our packing shed at 9515 Hergotz Lane in East Austin. Here, volunteers help wash, sort, and pack veggies for our farmers markets and CSA boxes. Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks.
Volunteer shifts are half days, from 8 AM - 1PM. On Fridays, we have an additional afternoon shift from 1-6PM. All volunteers are thanked with a share of veggies at the end of their shift.
(Don’t tell...but the Hergotz barn’s life is short. Soon we are beginning to build a new modern Packing Shed at at the Garfield Farm and all farming operations will be in one location. We can’t wait!)
JBG - DENTON
Did you know JBG has a new backyard garden in Denton? Just like our farm in Austin, you can volunteer here and enjoy a box of veggies in return. Our Denton farm accepts volunteers Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8am-12noon. During these times you can help out in the garden. On Thursdays you can volunteer from 11am-3pm and help pack CSA Shares. If you’re interested in volunteering at our Denton location, email Ryan at firstname.lastname@example.org or go ahead and signup here!
